When you are getting ready to pack your belongings for an upcoming move, there is plenty of planning and forethought that needs to go into it. Tossing items into a box can not only cause frustration when it comes time to unpack, but it could also cause damage during the moving process.

Dish items are breakable and need to be packed properly to ensure that they are left intact. Here are some helpful tips on how to pack dishes for moving or storage:

#1: Allow for wiggle room.

Extra space is nice, but not when it comes to packing dishes. Find a box that will hold your dishes and load up on plenty of packing paper. Wrap the dishes – plates, cooking ware and glassware – to avoid breaking any dishes during transit.

#2: Line the box.

It is a good idea to line the box with bubble wrap or packing materials, then stack the dishes on top of that. That extra layer of padding can make a big difference.

#3: Get the right-sized box.

It’s tempting to use a big box and fit all of your dishes in one, but this could actually cause a problem. Use a standard dish pack box, 5.0 cubic feet, and a little extra thick packing paper. These boxes are designed specifically for dishes, so things won’t move around and shift.

#4: Load on their side.

Although it might seem counter-intuitive, load plates on their side. That way you keep the weight off the bottom dishes and if you hit a pothole or bump, the plates don’t land on one another.

When it comes time to pack, start with the heaviest items on the bottom of the box and leave the lighter products like wine glasses at the top. There are even packing boxes specially designed for plates, glasses, and stemware, which will take some of the worries out of packing these fragile items.

Once the box is full and ready to seal, be sure you add a top layer of packing paper as you did at the bottom. Label each piece clearly and make sure it is clearly written on the outside of the box that the contents in the box are highly fragile.
