Home to the headquarters of both iconic Nike and grocery foods giant Reser’s, the growing suburb is among the more prosperous cities in the Portland region. With a small downtown sector but plenty of attractive housing and car-friendly neighborhoods, Beaverton tends to be popular with those who work at the local head offices or amidst the hustle and bustle of Portland proper but prefer to live in a more suburban environment.
A significant part of the city’s appeal and planned growth has been driven by its plentiful parks and popular public transit ties to downtown and southwest Portland. The region’s MAX light rail system bisects the town en route from Portland in the west to Hillsboro in the east while a heavy commuter rail line, the Westside Express Service (WES), provides service south to nearby Tigard, Tualatin and Wilsonville.
Among the city’s most prominent neighborhoods is the West Slope, situated on the westward side of Portland’s Tualatin Mountains and just down the Sunset Highway from Washington Park. This hillside area feels relatively removed from the rest of town while still being just a short drive away from the action. Neighboring communities along the southern and eastern edges of town are mostly residences built within the last fifty years, with just a few instances of truly historical housing.
The west side of Beaverton includes the sprawling Nike campus as well as the predominantly well-to-do neighborhoods of Sexton Mountain and Five Oaks. Their close proximity to the city’s major corporate headquarters makes these communities the favorites for newly arrived employees and Portlanders who don’t mind the commute.
While the city as a whole is primarily car dependent, Central Beaverton boasts the best walk score of any Beaverton neighborhood. This area is home to the city’s compact downtown district and features notable pockets of new mixed-use housing and dining developments like The Round, a planned Transit Oriented Development with a creative arrangement of office space, retail shops, local restaurants, and luxury condominiums designed around a light rail in the center of the plaza.
