Packing for an upcoming move? Don’t be tempted to throw all your clothes into a box all at once (or worse – a large trash bag) or take the time to fold all of your clothes so they don’t wrinkle in a box. Instead, move your clothes to a sturdy, large wardrobe box. And when it comes to how to pack wardrobe boxes for moving, it’s actually a little easier than you think.

Packing wardrobe boxes is pretty similar to just hanging your clothes in the closet–albeit a much smaller closet. These are one of the biggest boxes out there and they come with a metal hanging wardrobe bar so dress pants, blouses, or dresses don’t get wrinkled during the move.

How to Pack Wardrobe Boxes for Moving

Using hanging moving boxes is a great time saver when it comes time to unpack your clothes. Here are some helpful packing tips on how to pack a wardrobe box:

  • Choose the right box
  • Assembling the box
  • Packing the box
  • Moving the box

Choose the Right Hanging Moving Boxes

There are several sizes of wardrobe boxes to choose from, although the differences in sized box dimensions are usually the height. Most hanging moving boxes give you two feet of hanging space, but you’ll also want to consider the height of the boxes. For example, you’ll need a taller box for longer dresses than you would need for a box with just dress shirts.

Assembling the box

Before you start packing wardrobe boxes they need to be assembled, right? Like most boxes, they’ll be flattened when you buy them. Open it up, find the bottom, and tape the flaps shut. It’s important the bottom is sturdy because you’ll be packing a few light items in the bottom of the box.

Turn the wardrobe moving box upright and pull out the side of the box that is intended to be pulled out and folded down. This folded-down flap allows you to load the clothes a little easier. Next, you’ll install each end of the metal hanging bar on the openings on the side of the box.

Packing the Wardrobe Box

Now you’re ready to start packing your wardrobe box. These boxes are generally used for hanging clothes like suit jackets, coats, shirts, or dresses. Surprisingly, wardrobe boxes can be used for more than just clothes, too! You can add shoes at the bottom of the box, purses, sheets, towels, or blankets, too!

Load the pillows, shoes, or other items that will lay on the bottom of the box. Not too much because overloading a large cardboard box can make it quite heavy and you don’t want to wrinkle the bottom of your clothes.

Unlike other moving boxes, wardrobe boxes don’t need packing paper! The thickness of the box is meant to protect everything inside, without additional paper or bubble wrap. Once you have packed a few in there, you will discover how simple and convenient it is to load the box!

Moving the Wardrobe Box

Just like other cardboard boxes, make sure you don’t overload the wardrobe box. There are weight limits to consider when packing your clothes, and because the box is taller than other boxes, it can already be difficult to move. We recommend a hand truck to move these boxes because it’s much easier to see where you’re going,
