There are few things as exciting as moving to a new city or state or even just across town. Whether it’s your first apartment by yourself, your first home, or your forever home. Different neighborhoods, more room, and a new start.

On the flip side of that shiny new coin is packing up the old living space. How did you manage to fit so much stuff into such a small area? It’s an overwhelming feeling when you take a step back and truly realize the job ahead. Furniture, accessories, clothes, kitchen and bathroom items and so on.

Not to mention the cost of moving everything. You have to make a lot of trips with your car and gas starts to add up. And there are still moving boxes, bubble wrap, packing tape, and a host of other materials you’ll need. If the new place isn’t ready, you may need to rent a storage unit.

However, there are ways to save some money along the way. In fact, you might be able to make a little money during the process.

Time to Purge

Are you a packrat that holds on to everything? Maybe you’re combining two homes into one or downsizing after the kids have flown the nest. Whatever the reason, if you have items that just won’t fit in the new home, consider having a garage sale.

This is a popular way to cut down on the number of items you take with you. Consider this one simple step when holding a sale: whatever leaves the house doesn’t come back in. Even if the sale is a bust, you can still donate the items for a tax deduction. If the sale is a success, you can put that money towards moving expenses like packing materials.

Best of all, you don’t have to move any of it to the new home. As a side bonus, it also helped clean up your current home a little bit.

Time is Money

The most ideal way to get ready for moving day is to start packing a month beforehand. If it’s July, you won’t need those parkas and sweaters. If it’s November, the swim trunks and Springwear can be put away. Crockpots, the good china, and huge serving bowls can be packed up.

When the moving day arrives, you’ll be ready to go. If you hiring movers to work by the hour, this could really help when moving on a budget. Because it isn’t just the movers that are spending time at the house, you are too. Wouldn’t you rather use vacation days for a vacation? Preparing ahead of time will allow you to move in a single day, especially if you hire the right movers.
