Before Smooth Move People existed, Greg, our founder, was a full-time musician playing six nights a week in bars and clubs up and down the West Coast. The late nights and smoky venues eventually wore thin, so he packed up and headed for his sister’s strawberry farm in Sandy, Oregon, ready for a new chapter.
He didn’t have much money, but he did have a truck. The same one the band used to haul amps and gear. While flipping through the nickel ads (this was the 80s, after all), he spotted something unexpected: someone looking for a mover.
He called, explained he had never moved anyone before, and waited for the response.
“That’s fine! When can you get here?”
Greg showed up, only to realize the first person he would ever move was the caller’s mother.
What could have been a disaster turned out to be the start of something great. He approached the job with care, respect, and professionalism. She loved the experience. Word of mouth spread. More calls came in.
People liked him. They trusted him. And a new path had begun.
Over the next few years, Greg bought more trucks, hired more help, and built a reputation for being dependable, efficient, and genuinely good at the work. Eventually, he bought a building and officially launched Smooth Move People, a business that has now served Portland for decades.
